How to “Read A Wave”?

Wave

So, If you are a beginner to surfing or someone who is interested in the sport, you might have heard an experienced surfer mention something about reading a wave. This can sound confusing to someone who is just starting out in the world of surfing, but if you want to learn to surf, it is an important thing to know. So what does it mean to read a wave?

Moreover you want to know what reading a wave means. Reading a wave is identifying the different shapes of waves that come through the lineup. Therefore, Surfers read waves so that they can pick the best wave for themselves to ride.

However, to read waves you need to look out towards the horizon and try to spot any lumps forming. After that, these lumps will turn into waves. You want to be able to identify these lumps and guess what kind of wave it will be fast. Also, reading waves efficiently will give you an advantage in the lineup. Above all, it will help you get more waves and better rides.

There are many different types of waves and it is important to know what each one is and what they do in order to read them. Moreover, The main types of waves that you will learn to read a wave as a beginner are, lefts, rights, A-frames, and closeouts.

But importantly, in order to learn about these types of waves, you will need to know what a peak is.

A peak of a wave is the highest point that will begin to break first. Now that you know what a peak is, I will show you what each wave is and how they act.

Left and Right Hand Waves

A left hand wave breaks and peels from the right to left. From the view of the surfer, they will see crashing water to the right and an open wave to the left.

Right hand waves peel from the peak similarly as a left hand wave. The only difference is quite obvious now that you know how a left hander breaks. The right hander just breaks the other way; to the right.

Also, One more thing about the left and right hand waves is that if you are looking at the waves from the beach, your perspectives of left and right are not the way the direction is determined. Similarly, the directions of waves are determined from the surfers point of view; looking at the beach from the water.

A-Frames

An A-frame is a wave that breaks both left and right. When this kind of wave rolls into the lineup you will see a lump of water that will start to form into the shape of an A or a triangle. Therefore, these are one of the best kinds of waves to surf because there is a choice between going right or left.

Closeouts

At last, here is the close out. These are the worst kinds of waves to surf because they do not have an option of surfing left or right! A closeout is exactly what it sounds like; a wave that will close out leaving nowhere for a surfer to ride. There are very few ways to surf a closeout. An exceptional surfer will be able to sneak in a quick floater, aerial, or barrel before having to bail. For just about everyone else, you will most likely just go straight towards the beach and then bail.
